NEW GARDEN WATERING GUIDE
How to Water Effectively and Efficiently:
In general, new plants are looking to receive at least one inch of water per week. But in their fragile new state, drying out completely between waterings can be tough as they lack the root systems they need to cope with the lack of water. Therefore, in the first season watering is more necessary. In year two of a new garden, the plants should only need extra water during periods of drought.
WATERING SCHEDULE FOR NEW GARDENS
SPRING INSTALLATIONS
(April to May)
With the cool spring weather , the plants will enjoy getting a head start before the significant heat of summer. By giving them a good healthy start, they will quickly develop the root systems they need for drier weather. As it moves towards summer however, be mindful on how the heat dries out the soil. If the soil is dry 2 inches down, you need to water. As always though, deep watering is key.
Week 1 and 2
Please water daily for the first week. (You can always take a day off it rains significantly)
Weeks 3 and 4
Please water deeply 3x per week.
Weeks 5-15
Please water deeply 2x per week.
Nov 9 - Dec 15.
Please water deeply 1x per week. Once it looks like we are freezing at night, remove hose (and hose splitter at spigot) from outside and discontinue watering.
SUMMER INSTALLATIONS
(June to July. We don’t plant in August as it is too hot)
With the warm weather , the plants will need more water because the soil will dry out quickly. The plants will show you when they are thirsty (through wilting), but don’t consistently wait for this to happen as it is stressful to their systems.
Weeks 1 and 2
Please water daily for the first week. (You can always take a day off it rains significantly)
Weeks 3 and 4
Please water deeply 3x per week. If plants look thirsty or temps are above 85°, please water more often.
Weeks 5- 10
Please water deeply 2x per week. If temps are somehow above 75 degrees, move back to 3x per week.
Nov 9 - Dec 15.
Please water deeply 1x per week. Once it looks like it will be freezing at night, remove hose (and hose splitter at spigot) from outside and discontinue watering.
FALL INSTALLATIONS
(September to October)
With the onset of cooler weather, the watering demands will be less as the soil will not dry out as quickly. Please be mindful of possible periods of drought or increased temperatures when the plants may need extra water.
Week 1 and 2
Please water daily for the first week. (You can always take a day off it rains significantly)
Weeks 3 and 4
Please water deeply 3x per week. If temps are somehow above 75 degrees, move back to daily watering.
Weeks 4-6
